The Committee
Current
Galhampton’s village hall and playing field are run by a charity called, quite aptly, Galhampton Village Hall and Playing Field CIO. The charity is managed by a committee of up to 12 trustees who are elected at each annual general meeting, usually held in September/October.
The object of the charity is, in summary: “To run a village hall and playing field for the benefit of the inhabitants of the village of Galhampton and the surrounding area for recreation or other leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the conditions of life of the said inhabitants.” The full version is shown at the bottom of this page.
As well as providing the facilities of the village hall and playing field, the committee ensures these facilities are maintained, insured and kept in good condition. The committee is also responsible for managing the finances involved in running the charity. It is usual for the committee to run a variety of community and fund raising events, such as monthly village gatherings/coffee mornings, monthly lunch club, film nights, 200 Club and bonfire night.
History
The current charity is an amalgamation of two previous bodies, the Galhampton Village Hall charity and the Jack Bartlett Playing Field Trust.
Galhampton Village Hall began with a conveyance in August 1930 and was registered as a charity in December 1967 (charity number 254470) with the objects of: “Village hall for recreation, social intercourse and mental development and for the advantage and benefit of the inhabitants of Galhampton and their neighbours”.
The Jack Bartlett Playing Field Trust was set up via a Trust Deed in April 1978 and was registered as a charity in April 1979 (charity number 277622).
In November 1998 a Charity Scheme was established to combine these two charities into one, with The Jack Bartlett Playing Field Trust being renamed Galhampton Village Hall and Playing Field (same charity number, 277622) and the Galhampton Village Hall charity being closed (not until January 2001).
The charity moved to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in April 2022 and was renamed Galhampton Village Hall and Playing Field CIO (charity number 1198488).
